Art Duval is one of three College of Science faculty members who
received
the Outstanding Teaching Award from the UT System Board of Regents.
The other two are James Becvar and Juan Noveron, in Chemistry. Congratulations to all!
Larry Lesser leads statewide team on college readiness standards.
Dr. Larry Lesser is PI of a grant awarded in 2008 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to co-chair a statewide mathematics vertical team (of postsecondary and secondary faculty) to analyze the nature and strength of alignment of the state’s recently-adopted College Readiness Standards(CRS) and the current version of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills(TEKS). The team was also charged with making suggestions that informed the independent SBOE-appointed writing team charged with revising the TEKS to incorporate the CRS. Lesser’s team’s report was just published on the Texas Education Agency website and also summarized in an invited feature in the fall 2008 issue of Texas Mathematics Teacher. Lesser gave a well-received invited
half-plenary talk on this work at the 2008 Charles A. Dana Center’s Mathematics and Science Higher Education Conference. On another note, Lesser’s co-written article based on a Texas Education Agency grant that ended last year (and that was the subject of an invited talk at the 2006 Dana Center conference) was published in the fall 2008 issue of Journal of Mathematics Education Leadership.
Emil Schwab and
Helmut Knaust in Mathematical Sciences and
Gabriela Schwab at EPCC have just been awarded a new grant from
the Department of Education, MSEIP Program, for
Cross Institutional Implementation of Supplemental
Instruction.
This three year award provides a total of almost $600,000 to the two
institutions, with much of the money going to provide support for our
graduate students!
The Ph.D in Computational Science was finally approved by THECB, and

ALUMNI NEWS
Robert
C. Trejo, MAT Mathematics alumnus (class of 2007), is currently teaching
Mathematics at Valle Verde Early College High School for Ysleta ISD and is an
adjunct instructor at El Paso Community College Valle Verde Campus.
Robert C. Trejo is the recent recipient of
Teacher of the Year for the Valle Verde Early College High School Campus and
Top 10 Teacher of the Year for Ysleta ISD. Congratulations!!
