Message from the Chair

Welcome to the gateway for Philosophy at UTEP. Our department is located in Worrell Hall and we offer both B.A. and M.A. degrees in Philosophy.  Because we are a relatively small department, we are able to regularly offer several classes per semester with limited enrollment, enabling us to give more individual attention to our students. We are committed to grounding our students in the study of the history of philosophy while also offering a diversity of approaches to philosophy including special seminars on topics drawn from systematic and historical inquiries out of the continental and analytic traditions. The research interests of our faculty range widely from core areas in philosophy of science, metaphysics, and epistemology to work in phenomenology, Critical Social Theory, ethical theory, and ethics. The two areas of ethics and philosophy of science, broadly conceived, provide a framework for cooperative work by faculty within the department and with other departments and Colleges across the University.

Studying philosophy is a way to engage in some of the most significant intellectual, ethical, and political issues in the contemporary world. Learning to approach those issues philosophically is also one of the most important challenges that a student can take up, and arguably one of the most rewarding. Come study with us, pay a visit, or attend one of our lectures. The experience will be memorable. If you are interested, you can call, write, or email any one of us. If you are a graduate of our program, please stop by anytime for a visit.

Jules Simon, Chair
