The Computational Science Program was created at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2008 to provide the leadership in research and education for a strong interdisciplinary program.

Vision

The vision of the Computational Science Program is an interdisciplinary one, a synergy of different fields, that yields an integrated knowledge-base for the effective solution of complex systems where computer usage plays a fundamental role.

Mission

The mission of the Computational Science Program is to produce students that will acquire an integrated understanding of scientific processes and the tools required to address the modeling, simulation, and evaluation of such processes.

A computational scientist will be able to:

  • Construct mathematical models for applications in one or more fields of science or engineering
  • Design algorithms to solve the model problems in these fields
  • Select appropriate technology for implementation of the algorithms
  • Implement efficiently the algorithms, and validate the results.

The program currently involves faculty from ten departments of the Colleges of Science and Engineering: Bioinformatics, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Geological Sciences, Industrial Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics.
