The Statistical Consulting Laboratory was initially established as a core facility of the Border Biomedical Research Center (BBRC) grant funded by the National Institutes of Health .  Today, besides providing statistical research support to  BBRC Faculty, the SCL is a regional resource center for the statistical support of research in basic sciences, health sciences, education, medical sciences and other fields. The SCL provides a concentrated statistical and computing support to university institution grants and research centers, faculty, students and researchers in the El Paso region.
