Model Program    

Model Program of Study for Criminal Justice Students Entering UTEP as 1st year students. All Criminal Justice students are required to complete a minimum of 131 credit hours, including at least 54 credit hours at the 300-400 level. Of these, at least 48 credit hours of study must satisfy the requirements of the University Core Curriculum, and at least 30 credit hours of study must satisfy the requirements of the College of Liberal Arts General Education requirements. In addition, Criminal Justice Majors must complete at least 33 credit hours of study in Criminal Justice (24 of these at the 3300-3400 level) and a minor of 18 credit hours.


First Semester (15 credit hours)
  • (Three credit hours): CRIJ 1301: Introduction to Criminal Justice (Must pass with a "C" or better-to be eligible for the second CRIJ course), and
  • (Twelve credit hours): University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education

Second Semester (15 credit hours)

  • (Three credit hours): CRIJ 1302: Introduction to Criminal Justice II (Must pass with a "C" or better-to be eligible to continue with the CRIJ coursework), and
  • (Twelve credit hours): University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education.

Third Semester (15 credit hours)

  • (Three credit hours): CRIJ 2306: Introduction to Corrections, or CRIJ 3302: Police Systems and Practice, or CRIJ 3313: Crime in America, or CRIJ 3350: The Courts and Legal Process
  • (Twelve credit hours): University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education.
Fourth Semester (15 credit hours)
  • (Three credit hours): CRIJ 2306: Introduction to Corrections, or CRIJ 3302: Police Systems and Practice, or CRIJ 3313: Crime in America, or CRIJ 3350: The Courts and Legal Process
  • (Twelve credit hours): University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education.
Fifth Semester (15 credit hours)
  • (Six credit hours): CRIJ 2306: Introduction to Corrections, or CRIJ 3302: Police Systems and Practice, or CRIJ 313: Crime in America, or CRIJ 3350: The Courts and Legal Process
  • (Nine credit hours): University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education.
Sixth Semester (15 credit hours)
  • (Six credit hours): Criminal Justice Electives (upper division only), and
  • (Three credit hours): Required course in the minor, and
  • (Six Credit hours): University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education.

Seventh Semester (15 credit hours)

  • (Six credit hours): Criminal Justice Electives (upper division only), and
  • (Six credit hours): Required course in the minor, and
  • (Three credit hours): University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education.
Eighth Semester (15 credit hours)
  • (Three credit hours): Criminal Justice Capstone Course (CRIJ 3402), and
  • (Six credit hours): Required course in the minor, and
  • (Three credit hours): University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education.
Ninth semester (12 credit hours)
  • (Three credit hours) required course in the minor, and
  • (Six credit hours) University Core Curriculum and/or Liberal Arts General Education, and
  • (Three credit hours) free electives.

Note: The number of semesters required to complete the B.A. Degree in Criminal Justice can be shortened by taking more than 15 credit hours in some semesters or by taking courses during summer sessions.
