Message from the Dean

Welcome:

We are pleased that you have taken the time to visit our web site and learn more about the College of Science at the University of Texas at El Paso. Within our College are the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics and Physics. We offer B.S. and M.S. degrees in all disciplines and Ph.D. degrees in Biological Sciences and Geological Sciences. Interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Environmental Science and Materials Science are also available to our students. We have a total of about 100 faculty in the College, approximately1400 undergraduate majors and graduate students. A new Ph.D. program in Chemistry is being considered by the Texas Coordinating Board and proposals for Ph.D. programs in Computational Science and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology are in the proposal stage.

Science is an important part of the academic program at UTEP. A new 84,000 ft2 biology research building with a variety of modern features is nearing completion. We are working to fill several endowed professorships and seeking new junior faculty in a variety of fields. The equipment available to College faculty, students and staff is excellent and well maintained. We are working hard to expand interdisciplinary research within the College and across the University.

I am especially proud of the progress of our Medical Professions Institute. Under the directorship of Dr. Donna Ekal the Institute has expanded its programs and broadened its focus to include students interested in pre-vet, pre-dental, pre-optometry and pre-physician assistant training. This summer approximately 80 students mentored through the MPI will be taking part in U. S. based and international summer programs.

Our academic programs feature close student faculty contact, student research and access to modern equipment. We endeavor to train our students well and then promote their future success as they seek out graduate, professional and employment opportunities. Please accept my invitation to explore our informative web site and to visit our University and College.

Sincerely,

Anny Morrobel-Sosa
Dean of Science
