The Department of Teacher Education

The Department of Teacher Education offers programs aimed at providing qualified students with opportunities to attain the knowledge, values, and skills needed to enter the teaching profession and to receive an initial Texas teaching certificate/license. We also offer graduate degree programs leading to advanced certification in various teaching specialties and/or Master's degree in instruction.

Teacher preparation programs are collaboratively governed by a board made up of university faculty and representatives from local school districts, the Regional Education Service Center, and the El Paso Collaborative for Academic Excellence. The programs are approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and are accredited by the Texas Education Agency.

The Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations

The Educational Leadership and Foundations Department offers an MA degree with a major in Education and an M.Ed. degree with a major in Educational Administration. The department also offers a Doctorate of Education degree, Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration.

In addition to these degree programs, the Department offers course work leading to certification by the State Board for Educator Certification in the following areas:

  • Principal
  • School Superintendent

The Department of Educational Psychology and Special Services

The Department of Educational Psychology and Special Services is committed to the preparation of effective special education teachers, community/agency and school counselors, and educational diagnosticians who can successfully address the needs of schools and other youth-serving agencies, especially those in our multicultural communities. Undergraduate and graduate programs are based on established educational research and essential knowledge of sound professional practice. The Department offers Master's degrees in:

  • special education,
  • educational diagnostics,
  • community/agency and school counseling.

We also provide content courses for the generic special education specialization in the Bachelor of Independent Studies (BIS) degree program. In addition, the department provides three “service” courses (EDPC 2300, EDPC 3300 and SPED 3310) to all education majors.

EPSS works in collaboration with local area school districts and community agencies to provide quality professional training. Our faculty members strive to support life long learning and professional development in all of our students. The department is committed to meeting the highest quality of developmental standards for licensure and certification requirements for educational professionals.
