AMENDED: April 03, 2008

The information provided on this page is taken from the Certification Handbook found in the Home tab in this website. These policies may change and these changes will be reflected in the Certification Handbook.

Since 2002, the College of Education at UTEP has instituted the requirement that students seeking certification through UTEP must demonstrate content and pedagogy competency prior to taking the state certification exams. The qualifying exams administered during the Field Placement (Internship I &II) portion of a students educational career are used to determine competency.

You will need to take two qualifying exams during your Field Placement (Internship I & II):

·        Content qualifying exam

·        Pedagogy (PPR) qualifying exam.

Your Internship II grade will be determined in part by your successful completion of these two qualifying exams. If you do not pass both your content and PPR qualifying exam with an 78% or better, you will receive an Incomplete in your Internship II course.  You will retain your incomplete until you pass both exams. At the time you pass your qualifying exams, your grade will be changed, assuming you have met all other course requirements.

The College of Education provides consultant led review sessions for most domain areas. As a Internship student you will be required to complete six (6) hours of exam review. All EC-4, 4-8 and Special Education students are recommended to attend at least one consultant led review session prior to taking a qualifying exam. The remaining four (4) hours can be completed by doing a book review at the ARC center in the Education Blg. room 412 or at the UTEP library.  The current review session schedule can be obtained on this website under the Review Session tab.

Qualifying Exam Sequencing

The first qualifying exam you will take will be your content qualifying exam. You can begin taking this exam when you begin Intership 1.  The content qualifying exam will test you on the curriculum you will be teaching and ensure you are prepared for the state certification exam.

The second qualifying exam you will take will be your PPR qualifying exam. Its recommended to begin taking this exam after you have passed your content qualifying exam.  The PPR qualifying exam will test you on pedagogy and ensure you are prepared for the state certification exam
.
