How do I register to take the UTEP qualifying exam?
Registration must be done through Student Assessment website http://testing.utep.edu. Supply all the necessary information and register for desired testing date.
When do I take my qualifying exams?
It is recommended that I take and pass your content qualifying exam during your first internship (Internship I). Then you will take and pass your PPR exam during your second internship (Internship II). You must pass both exams prior to receiving your diploma. This also applies to all level education students.
For Secondary students, you may take your content qualifying exam once you have been admitted to teacher education. You may then take your PPR during your Internship semester. You must pass both exams prior to receiving your diploma.
How many hours of review do I need before I can take a qualifying exam?
Prior to each qualifying exam you take, you must have 6 hours of review. Each qualifying exam requires 'new' review hours.
After I pass the qualifying exam how do I register for the TExES and other certification exams?
Step 1: REQUEST CERTIFICATION EXAM CLEARANCE
Prior to registering for an exam, you will need to ask for clearance. This clearance must be done at least three (3) business days prior to the registration deadline. In order to be cleared to register for a certification exam you must meet all requirements (e.g., completion of qualifying exam with a passing score, program completion, GPA).
To request exam clearance do the following:
- Go to http://academics.utep.edu/texesinformation. Click on the TExES Clearance tab.
- Undergrads: If you are an undergraduate or are still working on your Block qualifying exams, click on Undergraduate Exam Clearance. Fill out and submit the form on the page.

Alumni/Graduates/CATE (includes Counselors, Diagnosticians, Principals, Reading Specialists, Master Reading Teacher, Master Math Teacher
- (Alumni): If you have graduated or have completed program requirements, click on Graduate Exam Clearance. Fill out and submit the form on the page.
If you are an undergraduate or still have in incomplete in your Internship course(s), please go to the Undergraduate Exam Clearance page.
Step 2: RECEIVE UNIVERSITY EXAM CLEARANCE
Fill out and submit the TExES Clearance forum. The forum is found electronically in http://academics.utep.edu/texesinformation website. Look for the 'TExES Clearance' tab in the top right-hand side of the website. Complete all information requested and click on the 'Submit' button on the bottom of the form. Allow three business days for Student Data Department to process your clearance form. You will receive on email confirming that your clearance has been processed.
Step 3: OBTAIN YOUR TEA ID NUMBER
Once you have obtained clearance to take a certification exam, you will need to obtain your TEA ID number. You will be using this number to register for your state certification exam.

Supply all the necessary information to complete your educator profile including up- to-date e-mail and telephone contact numbers.

Note your TEA ID number and write it down to keep with you at all times. You MUST know this number for using the ETS website when you register for any test.
Step 4: REGISTER FOR YOUR STATE CERTIFICATION EXAM
Once you have obtained clearance and have your TEA ID number you can register onlinevfor your state certification exam;
- Go to www.texes.ets.org . Follow on-screen instructions and register for the exam you are eligible to take.

click on "Register". You are once again a
"New User" since this is not a part of the
SBEC website. Complete all information
requested in order to register for your desired
test date.

Can I walk during graduation if I have not passed both qualifying exams?
Yes. You can walk but you will not receive your diploma until you have completed your internship course requirements and a grade change has been completed.
