What do you want to be doing in five years?

Did you know that many of your ATCP courses are masters degree courses that can be used toward a masters degree? There are three masters programs and three master teacher certification areas offered through the Teacher Education Department.

1. Master of Arts in Education (MA)

The Master of Arts in Education is designed for students wishing to pursue research and to continue studies beyond the master's degree. Students will work with the Department of Teacher Education to develop a plan of study. This degrees is a thirty-semester hour thesis program.

2. Master of Education Instructional Specialist or Reading Education (M.Ed.)

Admission Requirements - Applicants must be certified teachers or have at least 12 semester hours of undergraduate upper-division education courses, and provide letters of recommendation. Applicants may also be invited to an interview.

Program for Instructional Specialist or Reading Education
Thirty-six semester hours, including at least 27 semester hours at the graduate level. All upper-division undergraduate course work proposed for inclusion in this graduate degree must be recommended for approval by the program Graduate Advisor. Students wishing to pursue the Master of Education degree may do so through majors in Instructional Specialist or Reading Education. Students whose professional needs are not met by these majors may major in Education and plan a special program around those needs; students should contact the program Graduate Advisor for information and assistance. Specific information on the other two majors is presented below.

Instructional Specialist
In this major, students may choose to concentrate course work in the areas of elementary education, secondary education, early childhood education, bilingual education, educational technology, or health and physical education. Subject matter emphases; e.g., mathematics or history, may occur within elementary or secondary concentrations.

Reading Education
This program major follows State Board of Educator Certification guidelines and leads to an All-Levels Reading Certificate. The program does not allow for electives. Students interested in a concentration in reading not at "all-levels" should pursue the Instructional Specialist major with an elementary concentration and a reading emphasis.

3. Master Teacher Certificate Programs

Admission Requirements - Applicants must be certified teachers with a minimum of 3 years teaching experience. Applicants must provide 3 letters of recommendation.

Master Mathematics Teacher Certificate – The UTEP MMT certificate program integrates the State Board of Educator Certification standards. These standards are based on the rigorous EC-12 Mathematics standards and reflect the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Early Childhood through Grade 12 mathematics. Master Reading Teacher Certificate – The UTEP MRT certificate program integrates the State Board of Educator Certification standards. Contact the Teacher Education Department for details.

Master Technology Teacher Certificate – The UTEP MTT certificate program integrates the State Board of Educator Certification standards. The program will help teachers become technology leaders on their campuses, integrate technology in the curriculum to accelerate student learning, and serve as technology mentors to other teachers. * If you would like to get a masters in a subject area such as English, Mathematics, or Science you can use your ATCP courses for a minor.
