Socorro Mission Project. The
Department provided extensive archeological support needed for the
Mission project planners to restore the building to its original form
and materials. The Department also
conducted extensive oral and documentary historical research in order
to demonstrate the role and meaning of the Mission to the communities
of the Lower Valley. UTEP’s work was done
in close collaboration with the community and is an exemplary case of
university research skills being placed at the service of community
goals, while maintaining high scholarly standards.
Border Network for Human Rights. Several faculty have worked
closely with this group on public policy positions and suggested
legislative language concerning human rights and border immigration
enforcement issues (oversight, guidelines, goals for training, etc.).
U.S. Census. Several department faculty have worked with the U.S. Census to promote the census in the El Paso region and to increase the accuracy of the census count, especially in informal settlements and minority communities.
Native Americans. Department
faculty provide services to several groups of Native Americans,
including documentation of cultural traditions, promotion and
management of cultural heritage, and proper treatment of sacred sites.
El Paso Museum of Archaeology. The Department collaborates with the Museum to place small exhibitions about regional culture in the foyer of the Old Main Building at UTEP.
