The Academic Center for Engineers and Scientists (ACES) operates four main centers located in the heart of the Science and Engineering complex on the UTEP campus. Each center serves the needs of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) students by providing a multi-functional, state-of-the-art facility.
Classroom Building ACES was founded in 1997 and occupies approximately 5,000 square feet. The facility houses a large Active Learning Center with a variety of possible furniture layouts. Physical Science ACES was constructed in 2000, occupies approximately 4,500 square feet and focuses on developing tools and support services for students taking physics and chemistry courses. The Classroom Building Lower Level Expansion was opened in the spring of 2002 to provide more quiet study space and house the ACES Tutoring Center. The center adds another 5,000 square feet featuring 18 quiet study carrels, the tutoring center, and a meeting/classroom for student-centered activities. Math ACES was added to the ACES Network in January 2004. This 3,500 sq. ft. facility focuses on providing resources for students enrolled in Math Courses such as computer programs and the Pre-Calculus Peer Facilitators. Each center provides students with a comfortable, well-equipped environment for group and individual study, meetings, workshops, symposia as well as a place to relax and network with other STEM students. ACES is one component established by the Model Institutions for Excellence Initiative at UTEP funded by the National Science Foundation. Students, staff and faculty were involved in the planning and design of each facility.
The purpose of each center is to provide a supportive, dynamic environment where students feel comfortable working together and sharing ideas within and across disciplines. The centers also serve as an important resource for students by inviting speakers from on and off campus to facilitate workshops, presentations and training sessions. In addition, the student team maintains a test bank, study guides, as well as information regarding graduate school and employment opportunities. Free tutoring is ongoing throughout the day in courses such as math, physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. Students have access to amenities such as a fax machine, typewriter, copy machine, desktop and laptop computers, scanner, and multi-media equipment, in addition to other assets.
