Our Mission

Welcome to The Religious Studies Program!

It is our mission to offer an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and comparative study of the history and practice of world religions; and because of the location of our university, the program has a special interest in the pluralistic nature of border religion and culture.  Religious Studies classes entail a critical, academic study of religion from a variety of scholarly perspectives and include students earning a minor degree or taking courses as electives.

Religion is a dominant unifying and dividing force in our world, and the Religious Studies Program operates on the assumption that an understanding of religion is a crucial component of a liberal education, producing graduates who are knowledgeable and able to think critically about religion in our global community.  In addition, a minor in Religious Studies can be an excellent match to many major degrees as it develops analytical abilities, communication skills, and the intellectual flexibility derived from interdisciplinary scholarship.

I encourage you to explore our web site and consider whether Religious Studies might be an ideal minor for your major course of study or whether your educational experience might be enriched by taking one of our courses as an elective.
