Tobacco Cessation for Underserved Populations Minimize

Dr. Cooper is the Principal Investigator on the National Institute of Mental Health Minority Research Infrastructure Support Program Faculty Development Grant: Building Effective Tobacco Cessation for Underserved Populations. This study seeks to assess tobacco use and cessation behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs in Hispanics. Participants are asked to complete surveys that explore behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and preferences regarding tobacco use and cessation as well as the use of other substances. Weight, body composition, and carbon monoxide level are measured for each person. Several of the smoking participants will be invited to participate in focus groups designed to generate preferences within this population for effective tobacco cessation programs. Results from this study will provide information on the correlates of tobacco use, intentions to quit smoking, health beliefs, and preferences for cessation programs that will enable the design and implementation of studies to assess the effectiveness of a culturally sensitive comprehensive tobacco cessation program.
