Layers of Rome: From Classical to the Christian:
A Study Tour of the Eternal City
|
Through the combination of class meetings and travel to Rome, students survey the history of Rome from its founding to its fall. Instruction on location focuses upon the Roman Republic, the Empire, and the Rise of Christian Rome. Exploration of these significant historical eras is amplified by visits to historical sites like the Forum, Palatine Hill, Coliseum, Castel Sant’Angelo, St. Peter’s and the Christian catacombs. Museum visits include the Vatican Palace, and Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, home to Rome’s finest archaeological collection of Etruscan artifacts. Side trips go to Rome’s ancient seaport at Ostia Antica, Hadrian’s Villa and the palace at Tivoli, and there are opportunities to visit Pompeii, Florence and the countryside of Tuscany.

The annual meeting brings together Latin teachers from colleges and universities across the Southwest with Latin teachers from elementary and secondary schools to discuss the latest in scholarly research and innovative methods for teaching Latin.
The Southwest Junior Classical League student retreat brings together high school students from West Texas and New Mexico to showcase individual academic achievements in Latin language, Roman history and ancient art.
Feria Latina takes place in the spring of each year as a way to introduce high school students to life and study in college.
