    Isotope Geology

Dr. Elizabeth Y. Anthony

Dr. Elizabeth Y. Anthony

Libby Anthony joined the UTEP faculty in 1988, where she teachs undergraduate igneous and metamorphic petrology and graduate classes in igneous petrology and isotope geochemistry. Her research interests over the last decade have focused on three different themes:

  • The Cenozoic of western North America. Her students and she have worked on projects including: Ravi Nandigam's first-time description of a Tertiary carbonatite, Wendi Williams' documentation of the petrology, chronology, and volcanology of Quaternary volcanic fields in the Rio Grande Rift, Mark Ouimette's geochemical characterization of granites during the Laramide to Tertiary tectonic transition in the Colorado Mineral Belt, and Gina Wong's characterization of elemental dispersion around a uranium mineralized breccia pipe. Current students Chris Benker, Dan Miggins, and Tina Carrick continue this theme with studies in the TransPecos Volcanic Province of west Texas.
  • Granite petrogenesis. From the time of her dissertation, she has been fascinated with using granite petrology to image source regions of magmas and to decipher tectonic environments. Student projects on this topic have ranged from Melanie Barnes' study of the Mesoproterozoic of southern Laurentia to Mark Ouimette's study, described above. In January, 2003, she was an invited contibutor to a retirement symposium for Ilmari Haapala and contributed a retrospective paper to a Lithos volume commemorating the occasion.
  • Rift magmatism. One of her post-doctoral years was spent in Oslo, Norway, where she studied mafic rocks of the Permian-aged Oslo Rift. This interest has continued with studies of the Potrillo volcanic field in the Rio Grande Rift in collaboration with students Kent Waggoner, Wendi Williams, Weiping Chen, Chris Long, and Al Munoz. Keith Cardon continues this theme with study of mantle xenoliths from western North America. Students Peter Omenda, Michelle Barnes, Jesus Velador, and Vanessa Espejel-Garcia have worked in the Kenya Rift, where they seek to understand lithospheric structure, peralkaline magmatism, and geothermal energy.
