| | Dr. Jose Miguel Hurtado, Jr.
Jose Hurtado joined the faculty at UTEP in
September of 2001 after a 6 month post-doctoral position at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory. His dissertation focused on the tectonic
evolution of the Annapurna-Mustang-Dhaulgiri region of the Nepal
Himalaya, a project that integrated structural geology, neotectonics,
thermochronology, and remote sensing. At JPL, he worked on digital
photogrammetry and 3D visualization using ASTER imagery. His current
research includes the characterization of Quaternary faulting in the El
Paso area and its implication for seismic risk. He is also interested
in the development of handheld field computer systems for the
application of GIS and GPS in field data collection. Projects in
development include thermochronology in British Columbia,
seismotectonics in Bhutan, and neotectonics in northern Mexico. Education Professional Interests - Tectonics, structural geology, and thermochronology
- Quaternary geology, neotectonics, and geomorphology
- Remote sensing (visible, near & thermal IR, radar)
- "Digital geology", GIS, GPS, and visualization.
- Planetary geology
