The University of Texas at El Paso offers four different levels of certification for students who wish to become teachers:
· Early Childhood to Fourth Grade Generalist certification (EC-4)
· Middle Grade certification (4th – 8th)
· Secondary certification (8th – 12th)
· All-level certification (EC-12th)
These certification programs are offered as part of degree programs.
Early Childhood to Fourth Grade Generalist Certification (EC-4) can be earned through a College of Education program that results in a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. There are two certification options for this certification level:
· EC-4 Generalist
· EC-4 Bilingual Generalist
Middle Grade Certification (4th-8th) can be earned through a College of Education program that results in a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. There are various certification options for this certification level:
· 4-8 Generalist
· 4-8 Bilingual Generalist
· 4-8 English, Language Arts/Reading
· 4-8 English, Language Arts/Reading and Social Studies
· 4-8 Math
· 4-8 Science
· 4-8 Math/Science
Secondary Certification (8th – 12th) is offered for a variety of areas. Students interested in secondary certification earn a degree from the college within UTEP that houses the academic major of their teaching field. The available certification areas and their academic college are:
College of Liberal Arts
· English, Language Arts and Reading
· Social Studies
· History
· Speech
· Journalism
· Dance
· Spanish
· French
College of Science
· Mathematics
· Science
· Physical Science
· Life Science
· Science
College of Business
· Business Education
All Levels Certification (EC to 12th grade) is offered in several areas. Students interested in certification in one of these areas earn a degree from the college that houses the academic major of their teaching field. The available certification areas and their academic college are:
