Since 2002, the College of Education at UTEP has instituted the requirement that students seeking certification through UTEP must demonstrate content and pedagogy competency prior to taking the state certification exams. The qualifying exams administered during the Field Placement portion of a students educational career are used to determine competency. 
 

In most cases, you will need to take two qualifying exams during your Field Placement ( Internship's):

·        content qualifying exam

·        Pedagogy (PPR) qualifying exam.

Your Internship grade will be determined in part by your successful completion of these two qualifying exams. If you do not pass both your content and PPR qualifying exam with an 78% or better, you will receive an Incomplete in your Internship course.  You will retain your incomplete until you pass both exams. At the time you pass your qualifying exams, your grade will be changed, assuming you have met all other course requirements.

Currently the specialization areas that do not have a content qualifying exam requirement are:

Art, Dance, French, German, Health, Journalism, Music, Spanish, Speech, Theatre Arts   

However, you are still required to fulfill the PPR qualifying exam requirement in order to get a grade in your Internship II course.

Students who are specializing in Physical Education will take a department content and PPR exam.

Exam Preparation

Your major college is responsible for providing you review and support for your content qualifying and certification exams.

The College of Education provides consultant led review sessions for the PPR exams. As a Block student you will be required to complete six (6) hours of exam review. All students are recommended to attend at least one consultant led review session. The remaining four (4) hours can be completed by doing a book review at the College of Education room 412 or the UTEP library. The current review session schedule can be obtained on this website under the Review Session tab.

The exams you are required to take depend on your area of specialization.  The chart below shows which qualifying and certification exams you are required to take to fulfill UTEP requirements and to fulfill certification requirements.
