Computer Science Lab Usage Policy

Remember, it is a privilege to have access to these lab facilities. Help us keep your privileges intact by following these rules.

General Rules

  • The computers and other equipment in this laboratory are for use by Computer Science & Engineering students and students taking CS classes this semester. Do not give a non-authorized person access by logging in for the person or sharing your password.
  • The computers and other equipment in this laboratory are here to help you succeed academically and are not for your personal entertainment.
  • Non-academic activities --- blogging, random web-surfing, chatting etc. --- are permitted only when no one else needs the computer for schoolwork.
  • As the laboratory is a public place, viewing or displaying inappropriate images is not allowed.
  • Be considerate of others by keeping conversations private, not creating excessive noise and distraction, and maintaining clean work areas.
  • After 5pm and on weekends, a Computer Science Teaching Assistant (TA) will be in the lab, and has full control over lab usage, including the authority to temporarily suspend lab privileges.
  • If there is a malfunction of any of the equipment in the lab please inform the CS tech support team by sending an e-mail to cstechs@utep.edu with the name of the machine and a description of the problem. If it is after hours you may also report the malfunction to the TA on duty. Please do not attempt to fix anything, including printers, on your own.
  • Print quotas are now imposed. Quotas will be set to accommodate normal usage levels, but to prevent excessive printing. In any case, only print what is necessary, bearing in mind that the department's paper and toner costs are becoming a major problem.
  • Please take good care of the computers, printers and other equipment in the lab.
  • Please do not unplug any cables in the lab. There is wireless internet access in the building; information is at http://academics.utep.edu/cslab/.
  • No eating or drinking is allowed in the labs.
  • Failure to follow these rules may result in loss of lab privileges.
  • Your account will expire at the beginning of each semester, unless you register for CS classes that semester and request your account renewal.

Questions about your account may be addressed to the Techs in room 307, by phone to 747-8840, or to cstechs@utep.edu
