Nov 2009: Dr. Kelvin Cheu was nominated to the Infrastructure Systems Committee of the Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI), ASCE.

Nov 2009: The Mondialogo Engineering Award team traveled to Stuttgart, Germany for the final and came back with a Bronze Medal.

Oct 2009: Dr. Kelvin Cheu visited Nanjing and delivered lectures at Southeast University, Hohai University and Nanjing Normal University.

Oct 2009: Federal Highway Administrator Mr. Victor Mendez visited UTEP and Center for Transportation Infrastructure Systems. He met with Dr. Cheu and graduate/PhD students in the BIG Transportation Lab and viewed several research exhibits.

Aug 2009: 10 students from the BIG Transportation Lab attended the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) 2009 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, from August 9-12.  They presented 5 papers in poster sessions.

Aug 2009: Dr. Kelvin Cheu was appointed as Paper Review Coordinator for TRB ABE40 Committee for Critical Transportation Infrastructure Protection.  Click here for news release.

July 2009: The tri-national team of USA-Mexico-China was select as one of 30 finalists for the Mondialogo Engineering Award, among 732 project proposals from 94 countries. The team members from UTEP are Carlos Duran, Marilyn Valdez, Gabriel Valdez, Jorge Martinez and David Galicia. Click here for project details.

July 2009: David Galicia presented a paper at the 27th International System Dynamics Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

May 2009: The Center for Transportation Infrastructure Systems (CTIS) and BIG Lab are featured in Spring 2009 issue of UTEP Magazine (UTEP's corporate magazine). Click here to read the article in page 39.

May 2009: Gabriel Valdez, Marilyn Valdez and Iraki Ibarra received Eisenhower Graduate Fellowships.

April 2009: BIG Lab received a set of traffic and street signs donated by the City of El Paso Street Dept.

Feb 2009: Dr. Kelvin Cheu presented a seminar titled Optimal Assignment of Emergency Service Response Units at the Dept of Civil & Coastal Engineering, University of Florida, Gainsville, FL.

Jan 2009: Dr. Wen-Wai Li (PI) and Dr. Kelvin Cheu (Co-PI) receive a grant from Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) for a research project Air Pollution Reduction at the Bridge of the Americas.

Jan 2009: Dr. Cheu and 7 graduate/PhD students attended the 88th TRB Annual Meetings.  Two papers were presented.

Jan 2009: PhD student Luis Galicia joined the International Road Federation (IRF) as a Fellow and will attend a 10-day workshop in Washington D.C. Click here

Dec 2008: Graduate student Hao Lei defended his master thesis Optimal Allocation of Emergency Response Service Vehicles to Serve Critical Infrastructures.  Hao graduated with a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering.

Dec 2008: The BIG Transportation Lab starts to receive live video images at 24/7 from 4 TxDOT cameras surrounding the unviersity campus.  The video feeds are same as the one received by the TxDOT's TMC but available to UTEP via the El Paso City's TMC connected to the campus fibre optics network.  With this video link-up, BIG Transportation Lab joins the tier of university transportation labs with the capability to receive live video images from the local TMC.

Nov 2008: Professor Petr Moos, Dean, Faculty of Transportation Science, Professor V Skurovec, Vice Dean, and Associate Professor Ladislav Bina from Czech Technical University at Prague visited the College of Engineering, held discussions with faculty and students, and gave a seminar.

Sept 2008: BIGLab is awarded a research contract by the El Paso MPO to develop travel demand models that meet SAFETEA-LU's requirements and to provide technical support in their applications. The award of $450,000 is for 3 years beginning Oct 1, 2008.

Sept 2008: Carlos Duran attened a 2-day Roundabout Workshop organized by the El Paso MPO.

Aug 2008: Federal Highway Administration awards UTEP a $100,000 researh project in visualization in transportation planning.  The research team consists of Dr. Kelvin Cheu (PI), Dr. Raed Aldouri (GIS Center, Co-PI) and Dr. Nigel Ward (Computer Science, Co-PI).  Please click here for project details.

July 2008: Dr. Kelvin Cheu was delivered an invited seminar at Texas Tech University.

June 2008: 10 students attended the Institute of Transportation Engineers Texas District (TexITE) Summer Meeting in San Antonio.  Gabrial Valdez, Jorge Martinez and Daniel Arroniz presented 2 papers in poster session.  Carlos Duran was recognized as the Outstanding Member of ITE UTEP Student Chapter.

May 2008: Dr. Kelvin Cheu presented a paper at the 10th Int'l Conf on Applications of Advanced Technologies in Transportation Engineering (AATT) held in Athens Greece from May 28-June 1.

May 2008: Dr. Kelvin Cheu joined the UTEP's CargoTRUST research project funded by the Department of Homeland Security.

May 2008: Seniors Jorge Martinez, Gabriel Valdez, Marilyn Valdez and Arturo Bujara won the CE Dept Best Senior Design Award with their project Traffic Impact Study of New Development Near Mesa St and Executive Center Dr.  Gabriel Valdez won the Andrew Jones award for most outstanding seniors, Jorge Martinez won the Academic Achiecement Award in the CE Class of May 2008.

April 2008: At the invitation of Jiangsu Province Dept. of Education, Dr. Kelvin Cheu visited Southest University, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing Forestry University and Hohai University, all in Nanjing, China to deliver seminars in each of the universities between April 7-10.

Jan 2008: Carlos Duran, Daniel Arroniz and David Galicia attended the 2008 Winter TexITE Meeting in Ivring, TX, 25-26 January 2008.  Carlos and Daniel presented their paper in the student poster session.

Jan 2008: David Galicia attended The World Bank's workshop on Transforming Transportation on 18 January 2008 in Washington D.C.

Jan 2008: Dr. Kelvin Cheu, David Galicia, Jorge Martinez, Carlos Duran attended the 87th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington D.C. from 12-17 January, 2008.  Dr. Cheu and Jorge made presentations at the meeting.

Jan 2008: The BIG Transportation Lab moved into the newly renovated facility in E215 Engineering Building from Burges Hall.

Dec 2007: Dr. Kelvin Cheu, Osiris Vidana and David Galicia visited Dept of Civil Engineering at University Autonomous of Ciudad Juarez (UACJ), Mexico.

Dec 2007: Research assistants Carlos Duran, Valaris de la Cruz, Armando Velez, Min Wang and Dora Francis graduated with BSCE degrees in Winter 2007 Commencement.  The senior team consisted of Carlos Duran, Valaris de la Cruz, Daniel Arroniz, Min Wang and Dora Francis won the Dept of Civil Engineering Best Senior Design Award.
