Linguistics Masters Degree    

UTEP is a perfect environment for advanced work in Linguistics.  The international setting incorporates extensive English-Spanish bilingualism, the significant presence of German, Japanese, Korean and several indigenous languages (Tarahumara/Rarámuri, Huichol, Mazahua, Apache).  The MA degree includes the option of one of two possible specializations in addition to the general program—Linguistics, or Hispanic Linguistics.

Advising is required each semester for students in the MA program.  For advising and any other questions about the graduate program, contact the Graduate Advisor, Dr. Jon Amastae (jamastae@utep.edu) . 

The MA degree requires completion of:
  • Core requirements:

  • 27 additional hours of graduate linguistics courses

Specializations:

Applied Linguistics (AL) with a thesis OR an extended paper:

  • Core requirements:

  • an advanced course in or relevant to (as agreed by student and graduate advisor)
  • AND EITHER a thesis in AL (LING 5398 & 5399), and 15 additional hours of graduate linguistics courses OR  an extended paper in AL (LING 5397), and 18 additional hours of graduate linguistics courses
Hispanic Linguistics with a thesis OR an extended paper:
  • Core requirements:

Admission    

Admission to the program requires that applicants complete the application for admission (can be completed on-line at www.utep.edu/graduate). 
    In addition to the materials required by the graduate school, the MA in Linguistics requires three letters of recommendation and a personal statement of purpose.  Both should be submitted through the Embark system on-line.
   
FInancial Aid    

Financial Aid is available in limited amounts.  Opportunities include teaching assistantships and scholarships.  For more information about them, contact the Graduate Advisor.  Students from Mexico may qualify for waiver of non-resident tuition through the PASE program (www.utep.edu/oip).  In addition, they may apply for scholarships through CONACyT, the State of Chihuahua (http://www.chihuahua.gob.mx/sec/canal.asp?cve_canal=2392 then click on “Becas para estudiar en UTEP ), and other programs.
