Dr. Lee Ann Westman Visiting Professor
LART Room 233
lewestman@utep.edu
Dr. Lee Ann Elliott Westman holds a BA in Humanities from Brigham Young University, and a MA and PhD in Humanities from Florida State University. She was a Professor of Humanities at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI for nine years before coming to UTEP as a Visiting Professor in the Fall of 2007. Dr. Westman has a joint appointment in Humanities and Women's Studies at UTEP, and teaches courses that examine the connections between historical events and cultural production; she is particularly interested in the relationship between gender and cultural production and pursues that query in courses such as "Women and the Fine Arts" and "The Nude Body in Art and Popular Culture."
Dr. Westman's research focuses primarily on Mary Jane Holmes, a 19th-century American woman writer of domestic fiction. Her chapter, “How Mary Jane Holmes saved the New York Ledger, and Other True Stories,” is found in Popular Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers, a collection of essays edited by Earl Yarington and Mary de Jong (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2007). Her chapter focuses on Holmes and the 19th-century American literary marketplace. An essay on Holmes appears in the Spring 2008 issue of Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers as well. Currently, Dr Westman is working on a critical edition of Holmes's first novel, Tempest and Sunshine, to be published by Edwin Mellen Press. Dr. Westman has presented multiple papers on Holmes at academic conferences; most recently, she presented her research on Holmes’s novel The Merivale Banks at the November, 2007 M/MLA meeting in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Westman is a member of the Society for the Study of American Women Writers as well as the National Association for Humanities Education (NAHE). She served on NAHE’s board for four years and has been the membership chair for the organization since 2003.
