Courses at various levels of English proficiency are offered every semester. ESOL courses are sequenced, starting will general English language development courses at the lower level, and moving up to courses focusing on grammar, reading and writing, and research skills.
Lower level courses are pre-degree courses (e.g., ESOL 1910, 1610) and they do not count for the students' degree plan, although they do carry credit. Other courses are equivalent to freshman composition courses (e.g., ESOL 1311, 1312), and yet other courses can be used to complete degree programs (e.g., ESOL 2303).
Incoming students are placed in a level corresponding to their level of proficiency in English (see Placement Exam). Regardless of what level they are placed in, students in the ESOL program must continue taking ESOL courses until the required course sequence is completed. ESOL students cannot change from ESOL to English (ENGL) courses, or vice versa, unless special permission is granted.
