Mentoring Girls through Media!

Make a difference in the lives of local Latina girls!

Latinitas offers female UTEP students an opportunity to build their leadership skills as they interact with Latina youth and serve as club mentors.  Club Mentors are assigned to help with one girl empowerment club for the entire semester.  UTEP students will be involved in group discussions, mentor participants, provide girls with direction, serve as role models, guide activities and help with set-up and breakdown. No prior media experience is necessary; training is available.  Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply.

Our Mission: Minimize

Latinitas is a nonprofit focused on empowering Latina youth through media, art, culture and technology.   In addition to publishing the first digital magazine by and for Hispanic girls (www.TeenLatinitas.org), we host a media enrichment programs where girls build confidence and learn to express themselves creatively through media.

Club Latinitas: Minimize

We host bicultural girl empowerment clubs at local schools, libraries and community centers where middle and high school girls gather weekly for media enrichment activities.  Club members build communication skills through fun, hands-on media activities such as art, writing, poetry, desktop publishing, web design, filmmaking and radio production. We utilize media as a social justice tool to address issues facing young Latinas today and help prevent girls from high risk behaviors.  These clubs are held one hour per week after school or for a few hours a couple Saturday mornings a month. Participation times in this program vary from site to site (usually weekday afternoon between 3-5 or Saturday mornings).  Assignments will be chosen at the training session
