UTEP gets money to study drug use

EL PASO -- The National Institute on Drug Abuse has awarded researchers at the University of Texas at El Paso $372,766 to study the risk of drug use and sexually transmitted infections among Colombian refugees in Ecuador, UTEP officials said.

Michele Shedlin, Meg Weigel and Rodrigo X. Armijos were awarded the money by the group, which is a division of the National Institutes of Health.

The money will pay for a three-year study in which the researchers will work with the Health, Environment and Development Foundation, an Ecuadorian nonprofit organization, to develop effective prevention programs and interventions for immigrant and refugee populations living in international border regions.
