Academic Programs

The academic program in French consists of an undergraduate major or minor, with possible specialization in Education.  The program offers preparation in core language courses, plus the opportunity to concentrate on French literature or on more practical areas such as advanced conversation, advanced composition, civilization and culture, and business French. Our flexible course schedule allows for students from other liberal arts disciplines to complete their foreign language requirement quickly.  Many courses possess a WebCT component, and several have ancillary materials available online.

The Undergraduate Major

The French major requires the completion of the College of Liberal Arts Core Curriculum, plus a minimum of 27 hours of French courses in core and elective categories.  Students must also declare a minor field of study, required by all students pursuing a liberal arts degree.  The undergraduate advisor can recommend minors that are compatible with the major in French.

Advising is required each semester for undergraduate majors in French.  The undergraduate French advisor is Mme Linda Nodjimbadem, French Language Coordinator, LART 230, (915) 747-5061, lindan@utep.edu. Dr. Jane Evans is also available to answer questions.  You may reach her at (915) 747-7029 or at jeevans@utep.edu.  Her office is in LART 126.

Teacher Certification in French

All requirements for the BA, as described above, must be met.  Secondary certification requires 36 hours in the major (which may include FREN 1301, FREN 1302, FREN 2301, and FREN 2302).  FREN 3301 or FREN 3303 and FREN 3357 are required; FREN 3320 is highly recommended.  FREN 3305 and FREN 3355 are recommended for students who are not native speakers of French.  Note that FREN 4301 may not be counted as part of the major since it is a required course for the minor in Education.  In addition, a passing score on the Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT) is required for certification.
