First year
Required Form and Theory Courses (9 hours)
• CRW 5321 Narrative Theory and Poetics
• CRW 5364 Forms and Techniques of Fiction
• CRW 5365 Forms and Techniques of Poetry
• A Pedagogy class, in the English (Engl 5346) Spanish Department (Ling 5308) for those students with a Teaching Assistantship.
First, Second and Third year
Workshop and/or Variable Topics courses (15 hours) (Only three in a single genre)
• CRW 5366 Advanced Fiction Writing
• CRW 5367 Advanced Poetry Writing
• CRW 5369 Advanced Playwriting
• CRW 5372 Advanced Screenwriting
• CRW 5373 Advanced Creative Non-fiction
• CRW 5368 Variable Topics
• CRW 5382 Studies in Form
Literature Courses (12 hours)
These courses may be taken from allied departments. crw 5368 and crw 5382 may be counted as Literature Courses, but such courses will not count towards the 15 hours requirement above.
Electives (6 hours)
These courses may be taken from any department with an advisor’s approval.
***Independent Study (3 hours)
This course may be taken from any department with an advisor’s approval. It may replace a Literature or an Elective Course. To count as a Literature Course, it must be approved by the advisor and the Graduate Director.
Third year
Thesis (6 hours)
• CRW 5398 Thesis I
• CRW 5399 Thesis II (this course may only be taken in the last semester)
The thesis will consist of a book-length manuscript of original fiction—poetry, play, group of essays or screenplay—accompanied by a preface. Each candidate is required to submit a thesis proposal and a sample of the thesis-in progress before starting Thesis I. The thesis will be prepared under the direction of a three-member supervising committee and will be defended orally.
