EL PASO -- Novice teachers sometimes leave the profession quickly, but a conference hosted this month by UTEP's College of Education aims to persuade them to soldier through those first tough years.
"A lot of novice teachers end up dropping out of the profession because of social issues, lack of classroom management skills, administration issues. This conference is an attempt to address that," said Estella Valles, program coordinator for the University of Texas at El Paso College of Education's Project Action for Equity.
The fifth A Better Beginning Conference will take place Sept. 26. It will guide first- through third-year teachers through topics such as mentoring, teaching strategies, diversity and equity, parental involvement, classroom involvement and STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math.
Participants will receive a speech from author and high school teacher LouAnne Johnson. They will also receive a copy of her book, "The Queen of Education."
Deadline to register for the free conference is Friday. It is open to elementary, middle and high school teachers. For more information contact Mary Ann Couvillion at 747-6072 or macouvillion@utep.edu. Register online at tsn.utep.edu/tsn.
