The Global Public Policy Forum on the War on Drugs was held on September 21-22.  It was the first conference of its kind to incorporate a diverse set of viewpoints from a variety of distinguished speakers over the need for key drug policy reforms (Read summary here, see website here, and view event photos here and here).

Please note the upcoming release of Human Rights along the U.S.-Mexico Border: Gendered Violence and Insecurity (University of Arizona Press) in mid-November.  The book addresses "gender-based violence, security, and human rights from the perspective of women who live with both violence and poverty," but is as much about immigration and poverty as it is about women, thus providing a new contribution for transforming security debates (Read more here).

On September 15, 2009, the International Studies Association Human Rights Section 
announced Dr. Staudt as the recipient for the Best Faculty and Practitioner Paper Award for her work entitled,
"Explaining the Persistence of Femicide Amid Transnational Activist Networks: Where Did Human Rights Theory Go Wrong?"

 

  Biography                             


Kathleen (Kathy) Staudt, Ph.D. (University of Wisconsin, 1976) is Professor of Political Science and a member of the doctoral faculty for the EdD.  She joined the faculty in 1977 and teaches courses on public policy, borders, democracy, leadership and civic engagement, and women and politics. In 2008, she received the UT Chancellor's Innovation in Teaching award, one of two Texas-wide. From 1998-2008, Staudt directed the Center for Civic Engagement.

Staudt's research interests, published in over eighty journal articles and chapters in books, include women/gender in international development, immigration, university-community partnership engagement, education, and violence.  Staudt has authored and edited thirteen books, five of which focus on the U.S.-Mexico border including her latest, Violence and Activism at the Border (University of Texas Press 2008).  She is lead editor of Human Rights Along the U.S.-Mexico Border: Gendered Violence and Insecurity (University of Arizona Press), being released in fall 2009.

Dr. Staudt is also faculty advisor for a number of organizations, including the University Democrats, Students for Reform, Amnesty International (UTEP Chapter), and Students for Sensible Drug Policy (UTEP Chapter).
