The University of Texas at El Paso School of Nursing (UTEP SON) Simulation Center is designed to allow students to develop competency in safely managing priority areas of care through the use of state-of-the-art computer simulations. Students’ simulation training is centered on the
use of programmable mannequins that simulate various life-threatening and non-life-threatening scenarios, such as childbirth, stroke, and complications resulting from diabetes, asthma attacks, congestive heart failure, and other health problems.
Students currently practice the management of these diagnoses without exposing actual patients to risk. Through the continued use of simulation technology, we expect the competency of our nursing and health sciences graduates to markedly improve, resulting in higher quality of care, reduction of medical errors and, ultimately, more saved lives.
