II Summit of Writing Programs of the Americas
From October 17 to October 20, the department of Creative Writing hosted the "II Summit of Writing Programs of the Americas," which brought to El Paso representatives of writing programs of South, Central and North America.
The summit established ties among the programs so that, in the future, students from each program will be able to access shared resources and participate in faculty and student exchange programs.
This historic event included workshops, round tables and readings. Students, faculty and public in general participated enthusiastically in all the activities.


La novela La caza del venado, de la ex alumna, Juana Moriel-Payne, resultó finalista en el  IV Concurso Internacional de Novela Contacto Latino, 2016. Este manuscrito fue la tesis que dirigió el Dr. José de Piérola, y con el cual Moriel-Payne recibió el MFA en Bilingual Creative Writing en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso en 2010. La caza del venado será publicada por Pukiyari Editores a fines del verano en versión papel y digital.  




Paula Cucurella, a first year student, published a co-translation (together with David E. Johnson) of Carlos Estévez: bottles to the sea. Edited by State University of New York Press, 2015.


Oscar Zapata, a second year student of our Residential MFA just published a piece on Carver. Congratulations, Oscar! 



On Monday September 21st and Tuesday September 22nd our distinguished Professor, Rosa Alcalá, was one of the translators attending and presenting at the two day event "The Poetics of Translation",  Miami University’s Annual Translation Symposium.
