Research Interests Minimize

I am interested in how humans acquire grammar in first and second languages, and in how that acquisition and development continue through life in response to changing patterns of language use and cognitive functioning. Of special interest are the ways in which language processing and use impinges upon and constrains the form of novel words, that is, how processing influences grammar. My work to date focuses on phonological and word structure (morphological) development in  children and in adult developing bilinguals, and I utilize both experimental and naturalistic (corpus-based) methods. Alongside these interests, I am interested in changes in cognitive functioning associated with the use of multiple systems of communication, specifically bilingualism and co-speech gesture.
