The Prizes

The Department of Creative Writing will hold a yearly writing contest for UTEP students to be called "The Creative Writing Awards." The prizes will include a cash award and publication. They will be given in the following categories:

Poetry & Fiction

This competition open to all students (graduate and undergraduate) at UTEP, will accept original, unpublished works that will be judged anonymously by a revolving committee every year. The committee will award the following prizes:

Place
Poetry 
Fiction 
First Place

Second Place
$500 
$500 


Travel Writing

This competition is open only to graduate students in the Department of Creative Writing. The entries are also judged anonymously by a revolving committee which will award:

Funding

The prizes will be funded by:

  • Poetry and fiction: The John & Vida White Endowment
  • Travel writing: The Hector Enriquez Excellence Endowment

Submission

Through Regular Mail

  • To the following address: University of Texas, El Paso 500 W. Univesity Ave. Creative Writing Awards Department of Creative Writing Education Building 901 El Paso, TX 79968
  • Your submission must not include your name. Submissions with the author's name will not be considered.
  • Include a sealed envelope with the name of your submission. The envelope should contain your name and contact information.

Through Electronic Mail

  • To the following address: writingawards@utep.edu
  • Send your submission as two (2) PDF files.
  • The first PDF file should be your submission without the author's name. Submissions with the author's name will not be considered. This PDF file should be named after your submission's title. For instance, if your submission is called "Winter in El Paso," this document should be named: Winter in El Paso.PDF
  • The second PDF file should include your name and contact information. This PDF file should use the following name: Submission's name--author's last name.pdf. For instance, if your last name is Perez and your submission is Winter in El Paso, this document should be named: Winter in El Paso--Perez.PDF.

Publication

The winner of the prizes will be published in Spring issue of The Río Grande Review.
