Welcome To the College of Liberal Arts Secondary Education Website!



The College of Liberal Arts Secondary Education Program is committed to assisting students prepare and successfully complete the process of becoming certified teachers in the state of Texas. The Secondary Education Program provides strategies for success through customized learning opportunities structured to meet your specific needs. We will actively engage faculty and staff to ensure student success. Services for students include:

·         Information on the Teacher Education Program

·         Assistance with THEA registration

·         Identifying milestones to evaluate degree evaluation

·         Assistance in applying to the Teacher Education Program

·         Recruitment of incoming UTEP students: First-Year Freshman, Returning Students, and Transfer Students

·         Faculty presentations on Secondary Education student data

Education Courses


The following courses may be taken before acceptance into the

Teacher Education Program – College of Education

SCED   3311  Curriculum Planning

Curriculum Planning in the Secondary School - Basic Principles of curriculum planning in the secondary school.

SCED   3312  General Methods in Secondary School

General Methods in Secondary School (3-0-2) Selection and usage of instructional methods in the secondary school.

 

RED    3342  Reading/Study in Content Area

Methods and materials for developing maturity in reading and study skills, especially in the content areas from K-12. Special emphasis is given to the development of interest, the matching of students to proper materials, and instructional techniques for integrating the teaching of skills with the teaching of content.


The following courses must be taken after formal acceptance into the Teacher Education Program – College of Education

 

EDPC 3300  Development of Variations

This covers typical development (cognitive-language, physical-motor, social-personality) from birth through young adulthood as well as variation of typical development and accommodations made within the education system to include federal, state, local, and school-based decisions in instruction, curriculum, and law.

 

SCED   3317  Multicultural Education in Secondary School

A survey of cultural education models, instructional methods, and classroom interaction processes in secondary schools that reflect the cultural composition of the United States.

SCED   4691  Internship

Students seeking a secondary level certification area in the teacher preparation program enroll in SCED 4691 for required student teaching, which is the culmination of the program. Students are assigned to complete their student teaching in secondary schools. Fieldwork consists of assisting in student-centered classroom instruction for a minimum of fifteen weeks for the entire school day.
