Portrait of Dr. Irwin

Professor of Biological Sciences since 1991, and Chair (1991-99).

Teaching concentrated on introductory science and biology, on upper division and graduate physiology, and on graduate seminar in the social, ethical, and political dimensions of science.

Research focused in three areas: (1) Evolution, with emphasis on the units of selection, mechanisms of adaptation, and evolution of metabolic pathways; (2) Neurobiology, relating especially to developmentally regulated and functional alterations in gene expression in the vertebrate brain, including changes related to learning and memory at both the transcriptional and translational levels; and (3) Astrobiology, including alternative energy sources, putative ecosystem and evolutionary modeling, and habitability of life on other worlds.

Service contribution mainly in the form of teacher education outreach as a Solar System Educator for the Jet Propulsion Lab and NASA, and public lectures on science, society, and the future of both.
