Welcome to the UTEP Department of Art
Situated on the U.S.–Mexico border, UTEP serves the greater El
Paso/Juarez metropolitan area, a population of over 2.5 million. This
unique setting is an ideal environment bringing students together from
both cultures to explore and expand their aesthetic approaches and
interests through the universal language of the visual arts.
The Department offers a comprehensive program in the visual arts. We
award the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and the Bachelor of Arts (BA)
degrees. Students pursuing an art career may choose to major in any of
the following areas: art education, ceramics, drawing, graphic design,
metals, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Non-art majors can minor
in any of the above areas plus art history.
The Department of Art is located in the beautiful Fox Fine Arts Center
on the campus of The University of Texas at El Paso. The Department
occupies four floors of the Fox Fine arts Center, a 215,000 square feet
facility, with 30 studios, galleries and classrooms totaling 65,780
square feet.
The department operates two gallery facilities. Past exhibitions
included work by Luis Jimenez, Eric Avery, Gronk, Hermann Nitsch,
Donald Judd, Mauricio Lasansky and Robert Colescott. An essential part
of our program is an active and dynamic visiting artists series. Some
of the recent visiting artists are Chris Burden, Donald Kuspit, Dan
Flavin, Larry Bell, Terry Allen, Harmony Harmmond, Ke Francis, Linda
Benglis, Marjorie Schick, Jose Cruz and Charles Anderson.The department
maintains studios in the following areas: ceramics, graphic design, sculpture, metals,
painting, printmaking and drawing. The Rubin Center offers rotating exhibitions in contemporary art. This website is an extension of our department, with an overview of our courses, faculty profiles, facilities, activities, galleries, calendar and much more.
