WELCOME

Welcome to the Developmental English Program! Our faculty and staff recognize what an important time your first-year experience is and strive to create an environment that supports diversity and creativity. Our Developmental English courses are designed to develop your reading and writing skills to prepare you for college-level courses.

Our program stresses the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills necessary in college-level course work and lifelong success. You will learn to employ effective reading strategies at all stages of the reading process and learn to recognize and apply appropriate reading techniques for reading across the disciplines. Using the various stages of the composing process, you will compose texts for specific audiences and purposes. Through small group exercises and teamwork, you will improve your speaking and listening skills while developing relationships with the other students in the class. Our courses are designed using a learning community format which means that the students in your Developmental English course will likely be in at least one other course with you. This shared experience allows you to grow a supportive network of peers. You will explore a wide range of reading topics and journaling exercises that will provide you with global awareness, social responsibility, and the ability to express your beliefs and opinions.

We are excited to be part of your journey here at UTEP – Go Miners!
