Department Information

Welcome to the Department of Health Promotion. The Department of Health Promotion (DHP) at the University of Texas at El Paso is dedicated to preventing disease and improving the health status of diverse communities through education, research, and outreach.

Our program provides quality undergraduate and graduate education for health promotion and public health practice professionals and scientists.  We prepare our graduates for leadership roles in health promotion/public health, conducting innovative population-based health interventions, and research through classroom instruction, field-based internships, and other field and research experiences. Our academic programs, research, and community outreach have a special focus on Hispanic and border health issues.

Departmental faculty have excellent educational backgrounds and experience which they bring to their roles as educators and student mentors.  All of our faculty have received graduate and post-graduate training at first rate institutions. Most are fluent in Spanish and all have years of experience working with border and/or Latin-American communities.  They are actively involved in cutting-edge research on exciting and important public health issues in the areas of nutrition, pediatric obesity, diabetes, breast cancer, pregnancy outcome, air quality, tuberculosis, development and testing of vaccines and complementary and alternative treatments for infectious and other diseases, prevention of HIV-AIDS and domestic partner violence, and alcohol and drug education. Our graduate and undergraduate students are involved in many of these research activities.

We invite you to learn more about our Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Health Promotion, our Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, and the college-wide doctoral degree in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences.
