The Department of Music’s production company presents scenes from modern opera and musical theatre, including works by Adamo, Previn, Weill, Sondheim, and Yeston.  Many of these are premiere performances for El Paso, so if you’re an opera/music theatre lover, don’t miss this exciting event!

Degree Plans

UTEP offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theatre through the College of Liberal Arts. This interdisciplinary degree is designed to create “triple-threat” performers who are equally skilled in acting, dance, and singing. This degree allows graduates to pursue graduate study and/or careers in performance and art education.  Students enrolled in the BFA in Music Theatre receive rigorous instruction in music, dance, and theatre and develop their skills through classroom, workshop, and varied performance activities.

Auditions

Auditions will consist of (1) music theatre song, memorized; one (1) two-minute monologue memorized; and a brief unprepared movement audition. For more information or to set up an audition time, please contact Dr. Elisa Fraser Wilson, coordinator.

Performance Opportunities

The Department of Theatre and Dance offers a full season of studio and main-stage theatrical productions highlighting the talents of the university’s students and faculty. Its 2007-08 season includes: Could Tectonics; The Diary of Anne Frank; A Christmas Carol; How Do I Love Thee; The Romance of Dance (Dance production); and Macbeth. The Department of Music’s Music Theatre Company presents two to three scene workshops and/or full-scale musical dramas each year. Works include traditional opera, semi-staged oratorio, zarzuela, operetta, and music theatre. The MTCo. 2007-08 season include: Elegant Excerpts: an evening of scenes from opera, operetta, & the Golden Age of Broadway; & Romeo and Bernadette by Mark Saltzman. The UTEP Dinner Theatre has been in operation for 25 years and is the only full-time, year-round dinner theatre operating at any university in Texas. It is an extremely popular theatre which produces four, full-scale musicals per year for the El Paso community. The UTEP Dinner Theatre usually performs to capacity crowds, selling over 12,000 tickets per year. UDT’s 2007-08 include Miss Saigon, The UTEP Holiday Spectacular, Hair, UTEP Dinner Theatre 25th Anniversary Concert Celebrating the Songs of Tim Rice, and Urinetown the Musical. Facilities

The Departments of Music, Theatre, and Dance are located in the attractive Fox Fine Arts Center. This unique building offers students the latest in equipment and working space Performing venues include a playhouse (The William and Marie Wise Family Theatre) seating c. 400; the Studio Theatre (Black Box), with flexible seating to c. 90; and a 485-seat Recital Hall. Adjoining the Fox Fine Arts Center is our additional performance venue Magoffin Auditorium, which seats 1,200 audience members. This hall houses major productions in ballet, and showcases our large music ensembles.
